You've got an e32 model. You may want to ask this question on the e32 board but I've read that the "sword" could be the problem on your car. The e23 doesn't have this control unit nor the dual temp controls.

I have an 1988 735i left side blows hot air and right side blows cold air, for defrosters or heater.Can't seem to get the right side to blow hot air.???
