'81 733i 5 spd bushings/synchro's (archive)

First i would like to say I enjoy the column very much. I have an '81 733i with an original 5 spd transmission. i believe i need to replace either the bushings or synchro's , as the shifting is not tight,in gear the stick has play and there is quite a bit of travel while shifting. i was wondering if this is a difficult and expensive job,if polyurethane bushings would help the cold shift syndrome. I wonder if i could attempt this myself because college books are too expensive to compete with :-) Thanks in advance, Angelo
