I'm visiting from the E53 board (archive)

I've got the 4.4 X5. I've been using the Steptronic transmission pretty much exclusively. I'm wondering if I'm opening myself up to trasmission problems by doing so. I use it fairly conservatively in regards to rpm, but I do downshift to decrease speed, using the engine backpressure versus the brakes. Again this is conservatively like in parking lot traffic jams. I find that I can move at a stable pace and keep my foot out of the brake. Does anyone here know of a generic name for the Steptronic transmission technology. I'd like to do some internet searches and find technical information to throttle my usage.
