If your shifter is sloppy, you need to replace the shifter.

the best replacement is the M ROADSTER shifter available for about $40 from the dealer. It's an instant short shifter.

I use it in my E-30, but I originally saw it in a E-28 535i, and someone who took my advice, put it in a Bavaria. Everyone loves it.
