Does anyone know how to fix the control for the up/down, auto, etc. push buttons on a 85 735i? The defroster will work anytime that I push that button, but the others go on and off when ever they want. What part to replace? Can something like this be obtained from Radio Shack? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

the buttons are fixable. I did mine a few months ago and they work like new. If you take the unit apart you will find each button appears to have a little rubber cushion that they rest against. This is actually more than a cushion, as it keeps the switches from putting too much tension (friction) on the chinese puzzle lock mechanism that keeps the switches engaged. The solution is simple. The cushion is one long strip of rubber that runs behind all the buttons. Take it loose and move it about 1/4 of an inch either way, just enough to put a good section of cushion behind each button. Put everything back together and your switches will stay selected. One word of caution, there are several little springs in the switch mechanism so be certain to watch out for them and don't lose them. Even if your all thumbs you should be able to do this job, just be patient.
