Please do not take this the wrong way,
but did you make SURE the spring side is to
the engine block direction?
Why am I asking, well when I bought my car,
I had the same issue, found out somone put
the thermo in butt backworth.

Yes Jens the spring etc faces towards the windscreen and the cap with the wahler beand towards the radiator.
