I forgot to note this is a 733i '84.

The smog test guy suggesteg using a misting water bottle and spray water into air flow intake lightly for about a quart of water to get rid of the carbon in the cylinders. Worth a try.

I have an air flow meter from a 530i I owned before will it work on this one?

But how did the timing get advanced up to 18deg is that making the engine run so hot. The new catalitic converter is only a couple hrs old do they need to be broken in?

Forget the timing. The key is the little black box on top of the air flow meter. Inside you'll find a racheted adjuster.

the problem is that you'll need an exhaust gas analyzer, which means that you'll have to bring it to a shop.

Mark the adjuster so you'll know where you started, and move the adjuster one notch at a time, until you're in spec. You WILL find a setting that will pass.
