Doesn't matter.

No it isn't. carbon on the piston tops is not your problem.
>I have an air flow meter from a 530i I owned >before will it work on this one?
Won't work
But how did the timing get advanced up to 18deg is that making the engine run so hot. The new catalitic converter is only a couple hrs old do they need to be broken in?
Put the timing back to normal & bring the car to someone who has an exhaust analyzer.
Then pop the black cover on the air flow meter. Take the cover off the 530 AFM. You'll see the wheel and rachet. The only problem is that without the exhaust gas analyzer, you can't tell when you're in spec or not. I've seen one notch take it from major polluter to clean as it gets.
Florida used to to smog checks. they got rid of them last year when someone figured out that since only about 5% of the cars did not pass, that the whole thing is a waste of money.
But one time i brought a 81 528i in and it failed miserably. The guy who did the test started talking about valve jobs, ring jobs, etc.. I took it over to a shop, popped the cover, and in 10 minutes had the readings stable. You need to go one notch at a time, and see what effect it had on the analyzer.
in any case, I was able to get it running so clean, that when I brought it back to be inspected that same day, the testing facility accused me of switching cars. They almost called the police to check Vin#'s.
No new plugs, filters, valves, just a couple of notches on that adjuster did it.
