Murphy has struck me. Just when my '79 733i was running great whammo I have a power steering leak. Wondering if any of you have had a similar problem and how do I find out if it is the pump seals or something else. I certainly do not profess to be a mechanical genious but if it can be solved easily rather than harder it would be great. If I need a pump is there anyone that has one that would be compatible or the same for sale. Not too many options here in good old Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Sean Wilson '79 733i
They will usually leak because of a loose hose clamp or bad hose....or the back plate O-ring is bad. It's a pretty easy fix if you can find the right o-ring. Believe it or not, I fixed mine with an o-ring made for a Case tractor! IMPORTANT!...Just make sure the retaining ring that holds the plate down gets properly seated in its groove when re-assembled! I screwed this up the first time ,and blew fluid all over the place when I started it up!
Put a little black RTV silicone on it for a little insurance (let it dry before starting the car)....and you should be leak free.
