Re: Speedo/Odo Intermittent Malfunction (archive)

I'm driving along when without any apparent cause the
speedometer drops to zero. Cruise stops working and odometer
stops turning as well. Two to five minutes later it all
functions correctly. Might happen again or maybe not.
I'll start the car the next day and it doesn't happen during morning drive to work. (about 65km, mostly highway). Starting the car for trip home, speedo/odo don't work for 10-20km, then start running okay. Mighty strange.
The car, a 1986 735i with 91000km, was in storage five years. I have put about 4000 km on it since starting it up. I was surprised to not have any problems other thsn a bit of rough idle. Now the idle is erratic for the first few minutes after startup. I have to push gas pedal or engine goes down to near 500 rpm.
Any thoughts before I take her to the local bimmer grease
monkey.

PS Pictures soon. This model seems unique in a couple of ways. First it has chrome over the wheels. Was this an option for 735i? I have never seen this on local 7 series before in this area. It also has heated seats, which may be a North American model feature. Any thoughts?

I had the same Speedometer problem some years back. It was the battery (NiCad) on the instrument board.
