I would suggest checking the wiring connectors by the temperature sensor in the thermostat housing. Make sure that they are good. Also look at the wiring itself coming off of the connector, look for a section that has a repair/splice if there is one you might find a resistor that was installed as part of a recall BMW did back in the 80's. This resistor usually falls apart after a few years and can cause the problems you are describing. Either replace the resistor or just run a new section of wire to replace it.
