745 automatic won`t be automatic (archive)

I have a 83 745i with a mental confusion. It have a an automatic transmission, but it wish it wasn`t, and it is doing everything to prove it. When the program switch is in programs E or S the only gear ever engaged is 1`st. No matter if the gear level is in D,3,2 or 1. But with the switch in the 3-2-1 program i can force it into all this gears, so they all are there. The transmission failure light dosen`t indicate an error and there is enough oil on the gearbox. Anywone out there who have any idea about what is wrong and what to do about it?
