What does the connector look like? I know that a reference and speed sensor are located on the tranny bell housing with the connectors (3 pins each) running to the top back of engine. The is a hall sensor on the front of the engine just under the distributor that monitors the front damper pin. And there is a spark pulse sensor (2 pins) that slips over one of the spark plug wires at the distributor.

my car died at an intersection while actually performing fairly well. i checked the coil and had constant power and no pulse. an experienced bimmer mech told me pulse generator so i bought one and cannot find where it goes. i do not have any workshop manuals so it is diff to locate. please help with location or other suggestions that may cause this. is this fairly common part failure.

looks similar to the plug wire pulse sensor, but much larger at the end that would go around the plug wire. cable is approx 1.5 feet long and has a flat and angled plug with three prongs and rectangular shape. my first thought was around the plug wire, but this part also has diff plug.
