Sorry I can't specifically answer your question, but historically, automatic transmissions, even in the same model line are upgraded each year of production. When you rebuild an older transmission, part of the heavy expense is to upgrade the components to the most current for that model.

So, if you drop back to a 1977 transmission, unless it has been rebuilt with the upgrades, you buy all the weaknesses that were originally worked out before the 1980 trans was built. Not a good idea. Check the history on this trans with an auto trans rebuilder in your town. (Be careful of being sold on rebuilding however... not very successful on the three speed auto)

I would think that trying to move up to the 4 speed ZF4HP-22, would involve a lot of linkage and electrical component replacement, or addition to the car.

It seems to me that if you were going to take on that much change, you might want to do the proverbial 5 speed exchange.
