The plastic screens come right off and the panel below isn't too bad - row of screws all the way around and a rubber lip.
Jump 12v to the two large wires that clip together and run into the motor - if the fan spins fine, its somewhere else. I had the same symptoms and the fan was dead.
Fan dead?
Next remove the two clip in panels next to the fan cowl. Remove relays and detach wiring. Unclip the fan cowl and carefully remove - this is a pain - BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO CRACK THE OLD WHITE PLASTIC SQUIRREL CAGE FAN BLADES BELOW! There it is! Held in by one bolt front center and low with the evaporator temperature sensor attached- Remember the position of the blower - CAREFULLY REMOVE!
Buy a new blower or - I wiggled the squirrel cages off by twisting back and forth about a million times and went to a local electrical motor & tool repair place and bought a set of brushes - popped the top of the motor and soldered in the brushes. shot a little whitel lithium spray grease on the moving parts and reassembled. ($4 - but I'm a nutty engineer type). Been working fine for about 2 months - just tapping the motor might get the fan to work for a while - but with bad brushes the problem will return.
I use a product called DEOXIT on all the BMW contacts I R&R. Cleans, removes oxidation and protects.
Gentlemen,
several questions;
1st In the 735i are there seperate fan motors for heating and AC as in other bmw models?
2nd Can any one list locations for the associated fuses and relays.
3rd Does any one know the best way to access (this/these)
fan(s).
A little background for you. The climate control switches and LEDs appear to function.
The AC compressor clutch engages and the system has an R12 freon precharge. The aux fan mounted in front of the condensor operates, as well as the vacum pump on the left fender well. When travelling down the road forced induction will produce cooler than ambient air through the AC outlets. only no blower operation in any control configuration. The owner states that occasionally the blower would come on but has not for a month or so. I'm of the opinion that there may be a bad winding on the armature of the fan motor or coroded contacts in a fan relay or possibly a problem in the fan control switch. Having little expirence with this particular model and its specific component locations and limited technical data any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
