The 745 is a great car and I am by no means a hard core BMW guy as your family but I own 2 7's along with many american performance cars. One an 86 735 as my daily transportation and the other possibly the lowest milage 745 in existance, it is and 85 executive with 27K miles. Both cars are great, but on the topic of power, the 735 is a slug and mine is one if the 218HP versions with a chip and exhaust. My 745 is extremely fast but is not 100% stock. This difference of the cars is that of a city bus and a corvette if that means anything to you. The good thing about the 745 that fools many who dont know the car is its weight, you would think it is heavy boat, but it is actually as light as a new M3 and quite a bit lighter than a new M5, so its power to weight ratio is very good and it you do a couple of things to it, it is extremely fast for a car of its date and class. It has more torque than just about any other BMW too even in its stock form. I highly recommend a 745, but be sure you are mechanically experienced as sending it to a shop for every little bug would break even bill gates. They are pretty reliable as a whole, but quite tempermental on little things... So is my 735, but I use it 100 times more. As far as everything there is to know, that is somthing that would take a book, but you have come to the right place and just search through the archives on any topic and you will find some good information. Good luck on your search.

I am seriously considering buying a 745i at the end of the summer and I would like to hear any and all input on this car. Common problems, good points, aftermarket market, everything. My family has driven BMWs all my life and I understand about the maintenance costs etc of owning Bimmers. I just want to know everything there is to know about this car before I buy one. Not so much that I am going to change my mind about it as I really do want one, but what to look for when I buy it and how the car performs. Is it really that much quicker over the 735i with that turbo? Whats this I hear about a self leveling suspension, stuff like that. Please feel free to email me with as long an email as you want because with a rare car such as the 745i I don't want to be the one that kills it doing something stupid. For those of you real car lovers I plan on fixing everything thats wrong with it and maintain it to the best of my abilities, BMW owners have a real passion for their cars and I am certainly one of them. I hope to become an active member on this board when I get a 7 of my own.
Thanks all,
James
