The recommended fluid for most is Dexron Fluid , which is commonly sold as Automatic Transmission Fluid. The Owner's Manual for my '83 733i recommends DexronII (Now DexronIII.)

Do not use regular power steering fluid or brake fluid. It is said that regular power steering fluid causes water to accumulate in the lines, leading to fast deterioration of the hoses.
