Hey there Ryan, glad you found a cheap 735i. Might I ask first though, is this going to be a daily driver, a special car, or a get-me-to-where-I'm-going car? Becasue if neglected these cars can become very expensive to fix. If this car is to be your "baby" like most of us here on the board, you will want to watch out for certain things, erratic engine idling, weird noises-i.e=grinding, wobbles, shakes, and most bothersome and problematic, the rust bug. Mechanical components can be refurbished or replaced(some costly, others cheap), but bodywork and paint is pretty expensive, and if you sell the car you may never get the money you put in it, out of it. Watch on the rear fenders, front fenders, rockers, bottoms of the doors, around trim, especially the US bumpers, and around the tail lights. Also watch for poorly done bodywork and accident damage.
Ok, back to other aspects, these cars are a joy to own and wonderful to drive, but a worn-out suspension, and weak steering can hamper you driving enjoyment. Go to each corner of the the car and push down, then let go, the car should "rise" back up, if it bounces quite a bit, then that means a new suspension, I usually allow 1 1/2 bounces. Next, turn the steering wheel, if any excessive play is noticed, then bushings and other steering components may be worn.
On to the drivetrain, if it has the ZF4HP22 auto tranny, don't revv it whilst in park, pressure builds up, and I think this blows the forward "A"
clutchpack. If it's the updated ZF4HP23 with switchable gearbox, then everything should be A OK! Make sure the tranny has had a recent new filter and lubricant change too.
The M30B35 engine is a wonderful free-revving unit, these engines are virtually bulletproof with routine maintenance, my 733i just turned 314,000Kms! Routine oil and filter changes go a long way, also spark plug changing/ cleaning will improve gas milage and performance.
Lastly just look over the general car if it looks very clean outside, inside, and under the hood, then she should give you many miles of wonder ful, if not, then you may've stumbled onto a basketcase. I'm sure there is lots I left out. but my fingers are starting to cramp! However, this should be a good starting point, good luck with the car, and if you buy it, welcome to the wonderful world of BMW ownership!
