My auto tranny with 160k is beginning to slip when cold, but otherwise runs fine. Have done new filter and fluid, but has not helped. I've been tossing around the idea of converting to a 5 speed in the future - has anyone out there done this on an E23? Any ballbark figures on cost vs a rebuilt auto?

I will sell you a good-running 79 Euro 735 5speed that you can get the parts from for $1000 - then you can part it out...
