It's important that the cooling system hold a constant pressure. Often times a radiator cap is not up to spec, or there is a slow pressure leak in the system, perhaps at the cap gasket. A good radiator shop will put an attachment on between the cap and the tank and introduce the specified pressure and see if it hold. This may not appear as water leaking, as it's at the cap. Slow temp rise is a symptom. Other very common "traffic rise" temps are aux fan not coming on at proper lo/hi temps and fan clutch going bad.
Cheapest place to start is the pressure test, cause it's usually the cap or gasket. If you decide to just get another cap, make sure it's the spec for your car. Check with a shop.... sometimes these people know what they're doing.
Tracking down cooling system problems by yourself is IMO the absolute worst. The problems are no way near being logical.
