If you are anywhere inclined to have the 5 speed, research it well, and do the swap.

The history on rebuilding these trans is atrocious on the 3HP-22 and a bit better on the 4HP-22 trans. If you are considering the auto rebuild, budget $2000 and research it even more than the 5 speed swap. I have know people who go 2 rebuilds before giving up on the car. I have always been told, just find another used servicable auto trans and drive it until it too dies.

I'll catch hell on this post, but that's my opinion

Go 5 speed. Your car looks excellent, and well worth the swap. But, it's a lot of work. A lot cheaper than two Auto trans rebuilds. If you go the rebuild route, the most important point I would home in on are the strength of the warranty, with a rebuilder who has a track record and a lot to lose (deep pockets) if you have a problem.
