BOY! I DON'T Know What happened there... Quiz (archive)

new experience on my 82-733i. Stop at light. Car idling normally at 900 rpm. Slipped it in neutral (20 minute train crossing). Engines starts hunting for idle.... 900 to 1200 RPM, as if someone is turning on & off spark or fuel. Revs up to 1200, dies off to 900, revs.... you get it. Put it back in drive and idle normalizes, put in neutral, or park and the cycle starts again.

All the while this is happening (at 1-2 second intervals) the vacuum (economy) guage is drifting back and forth from 0 to 40 (3-4 second sweeps across the guage)
