My auto tranny with 160k is beginning to slip when cold, but otherwise runs fine. Have done new filter and fluid, but has not helped. I've been tossing around the idea of converting to a 5 speed in the future - has anyone out there done this on an E23? Any ballbark figures on cost vs a rebuilt auto?

Hi Pete,
That would be a pretty big job and forbiden here in Switzerland but I would say, just do it! The car will dramatically change the caracter with a 5 speed and will be much more fun to drive...
About costs, I would buy a parts car of the same year. It's the cheepest and "easest" way to do it.
