Don't know anything about you, and won't make suppositions, BUT:

It's a vastly different car than your 535i. Heavier and it's a cruiser. It has different problems altogether, and you should spend some time in the archives looking for buying tips. It's an extremely safe car if you have family. Typically, the auto trans in that year is good, IF service records show consistent maintenance. I have the 733 w/ a very rare 3spd auto (it has twice the mileage expected on it at 236K). I kicked it in the butt yesterday, and the car scoots for a big sedan. Do not normally expect this life from the trans if you can't document service.

If you are thinking about converting to 5 speed, or adding a turbo, wait for the right car. If you do this you will easily have twice the real value of the car invested before you are done.

Speaking only of the standard aspirated cars (not the 745), they are NOT rare, plus even good ones are DIRT CHEAP for the value you get in the car.

But, if I wanted the driving performance learned from a 535i, the 7 series would not be a choice.

Now the 6 series..... Oh well, that's another story.
