In 1981, the US only had the 733i with 176 hp. The '81 Euro 735i likely had the higher compression engine with 218 hp. They may have had the "L" block engine (check for a painted "L" on the driver's side of the block) which many consider desirable (shorter stroke). You can tell if it has a close ratio 5 speed by the shift pattern. If 1st gear is left and down, then it's a close ratio (1:1 fifth gear). If it's left and up, then it's a Getrag 265 (.81 fifth gear). Also, a Euro may not have some luxury items (leather, sunroof, even power windows). And of course, the Euro did not have 5 mph bumpers.
