Backfire in the exhaust is much more rare than it used to be in the pre catalyst days - The cat should burn the unburned fuel an avoid combustion in the exhaust system. Backfire is most typical of lean misfire (but can also occur with rich misfire), the engine begins to misfire and the misfires dump unburned fuel into the exhaust - an exhaust leak can promote combustion in the exhaust by supplying additional air.

I would think that injectors, air flow meter, plugs, cap and wires would be good places to start. If you have the 5 series Benleys - I'd do the Motronic 35 pin check to see what info the brain is getting.

My 83 733i sounds like it is backfiring. I only hear it after acceleration and I'm beginning to slow down.I had new muffler installed from converter back in February 2000. What kind I troubleshoot to find this problem?
THANKS;

Thanks For info.
