i have a 1983 733i,and when it is started, the idle drops very low, then races, cycling back and forth. Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix it ?
thank you

Check the engine temperature switch. It locates in front of the engine near fan. You can check it with a meter. It should open when it is cold and short when it is hot. If it is correct, the problem should be anything else. If it is not correct, you need to replace a new one. In my case, the connection is bad. It cause the surging when engine is hot. Hope this will help.
