When I bought my 84 733i, all the approx. 1" diameter hoses for the idle circuit were bad. Its right on top of the engine (between intake and head I think) There is an idle control valve that gets dirty stops working (can be cleaned) and an idle circuit activated by an idle switch. If you have the Benley's for 5 series, you can do a complete diagnostic at the Motronic box - thats how I fixed my idle irregularities - mine had idled perfectly for over 2 years.

i have a 1983 733i,and when it is started, the idle drops very low, then races, cycling back and forth. Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix it ?
thank you
