The "L" block is a sporting version of the regular M30 engine which was used in racing. The stroke is a little shorter and I think the pistons were a bit different, so it revs better. Many say this version of the M30 is more desirable. It was used during 1979 and 1980, maybe 1981 also.

I rode in a 1980 528i transplanted with this engine and it was a blast.
