86 735i heater core problem (archive)

The heater core in my 86 735i has given up the ghost. The thought of pulling it out from under the dash fills me with dread. Has anyone done this job? Should I just wear extra clothes in winter!!

Had thought of adding some radiator repair to the coolant. Is this a viable option, or too dangerous?
