Your friends are doing 4-500 Horsepower with almost twice the engine size to begin with. As an old "rodder" I remind you that there is no substitute for cubic inches. Even a 4 liter BMW engine still falls short by almost 2 liters from a 350 CI chevy motor. When you look at what some of the BMW owners on this board are dragging out of 3.5 to 3.9 liter engines, it's absolutely amazing. Start thinking about it in relation to HP/CI and you'll be surprised at how well BMW designed these engines.
Sure, If all I wanted was a big sedan with 500 horsepower, for a moderate outlay, I'd do the right thing from the start. I'd start with almost 6 liters (GM) and go from there.
