your master brake cylinder is probably shot. There are 2 chambers inside. This first is normally used and the second acts as a back up. The symptoms are excessive brake pedal travel. And I mean excessive. Did it feel like you were not going to be stopping at all and then all of a sudden (last 1/4 inch) the brakes took hold?
