A bad master cylinder will allow the pedal to go down slowly if you hold pressure on it when the car is standing still (a safer way to test it). Typically it will stop at the usual place, and then slowly bleed down about half way. A brake bomb problem usually only shows up on panic stops, when your normal braking turns to no braking. Rebuilt master cylinders aren't too expensive, and I bought one from a local auto parts house for around $85
