Jens, I wonder how you would know this?

Steve...the piece Jens is talking about is welded to the back of the flywheel and it is shaped like an upside down block "L". The reference sensor takes its reading from this piece and the speed sensor reads from the flywheel ring gear. That's why the two are slightly staggered at the bellhousing. If the reference sensor can't "see" this piece, it can not provide crankshaft/cylinder position to the Motronic and the Motronic will not allow spark.
