I agree with everything you've said, with the exception of the fuel pump shut-off. When the knock control kicks in on mine it does not shut off the fuel pump, but does activate the waste-gate solenoid and dump the boost. Pretty much the same effect on the drag race though. My car will not reset after knock control engages until the car has been shut-off and re-started. The fuel cut would seem a dangerous way to control an apparent lean condition under full boost (as you've pointed out more than once).
