brake pedal sometimes goes mushy.... (archive)

Is this an indication of a failing brake bomb? If so, what's it gonna cost to replace. I'll do the work myself, as I've had the car in Germany (and the master mechanic just shakes his head and mutters "old car.."). Also, is it difficult to rebuild a front brake caliper? My front left has a sticky outer piston.
