I jacked up the rear end, pulled back the boot on the diff sensor and gave the terminals a generous spray of WD-40. ( a dewatering spray lubricant, I didnt have any "tuner" cleaner on hand) It didn't recover straight away, but later that day, after 20- 30kms everything started working again.

I won't even try to understand why a bad signal from the diff sensor basically scrambles the whole dash but then I am not a Beemer Engineer!

Thanks Jens, is always nice on a forum, to get an answer from a person who has a "history" of helpful and informative answers, (rack up another one!)

PS it my partners car and she is very happy to have her speedo back. (she saids its so easy to exceed the speed limit in the 735..hehe)
