The AC, as well as the rest of the HVAC, can be a real pain in the ass with these cars. And if the previous owner and or owners was not really deligent with the upkeep, it could need all sorts of "minor" work. This "minor" work usually adds up to a lot of time and money. I purchased my 84 733i for $1700. It is a euro model with the euro 3.3 motor (more HP), big/little lights and a 5 speed. It also had a rebuilt head, SS Ansa exhaust, new radiator, alternator and fuel pump. And like the one you are looking at, the AC did not work nor did the HVAC work correctly. In the time I have had it, I have put another $600 in it and I know I will still have to put another $500 in it to make it perfect. I have done all the work my self and can not tell you the hours I have put in it. If I was paying someone to do the work, I would easily have another $2500 to $3500 in it.
When maintained, these cars are great. For the money, nothing comes close. Just make sure you know what you are getting into with the one you are looking at. These cars are not rare (well maintained ones are though), and I see them for sale all the time. If this one is not right for you, there are plenty of others to choose from.
Good luck.
