You have read right. Antifreeze that contains Phosphate attacks the aluminium. It builds up on the aluminium parts, just like the deposits you see in your bathroom fixtures, it turns into a powder that eventually will clog your radiator. Phosphate free antifreeze is only about a dollar a gallon more than the cheaper antifreeze.
