Simon,
My experience has been that the seats sag and give as they age, not get harder. Usually, the resulting lack of support is what causes the actual pain in the rear/back/neck. You might check to see if the springs are actually broken, or the back frame bent or broken. Remove the cover from he back of the seat and take a look. I haven't heard many complaints here, but the 5 series seats do have problems in these areas.
