hi everyone, new to this board and to these cars. Just wondering how a 7 e23 compares to a 5 e28, i have heard nothing but good stuff about the e28 5 series and just wondering if the 7 series is the same, are they about the same in reliability and maintanence, safety? thanks

I have owned several e28s and currently have a e23 745. You are comparing apples and oranges. Both taste great but are very different!

IMHO a properly set up e23 is a great car but a e28 will feel more "nimble". Engines/transmissions are common to both but the e23 has a problematic HVAC system. The e23 HVAC was a major contributor to the e23 reputation as a maintence headache. The system is fixable given time and money.

I would take a 535 over a 735 but not over a 745. As to safety; the e23 is a tank but I have seen e28s take a hit and protect their owners. ABS was available on both.

The e23 just eats up miles on a trip with 4 adults and luggage. I don't think that I would want to spend 5 hours in the back seat of a e28 unless I was sharing it with Sharon Stone.

Both are great cars. Good luck.
