You are right about the socket thing, there would in most likelyhood be more problems with that configuration. Just makes the repair less consumer fixable.

I think there is a flaw in how the circuit board is designed. There are two bolts that secure the Transistor to the board. Only one of them makes an electrical connection thus that single land carries all the current. I didn't think to solder a wire from the second bolt connection (It is plated on the board but doesn't connect to anything) to the land that makes the electrical connection to the first bolt. Next time I have to go into the HVAC system again, I will plan to make that fix for both modules.
