Yes, the knock control computer will open the wastegate dumping your boost if it senses a ping, and the Motronic will shut you down if 10 psi boost is exceeded. You could have a sticking wastegate valve. It's simple to pull off and check for free movement of the valve. Just takes a 12 point 10mm socket. Remove the four nuts and pull off the wastegate. No gasket to worry about.

As for the cruise control, (not sure about the shuttle analogy) with the Tuoma conversion the cruise control doesn't get nearly as much use on my car anymore.
