How to troubleshoot the zf 4hp22 eh tranny? (archive)

I recently replaced the cylinder head on my 1985 745i.

The transmission ran fine before the tear down, but after finally reinstalling the head and all parts, which included removal of the instrument cluster, the transmission indicator in the instrument cluster does not light up (you know P,R,N,D,3,2,1, 123) and the transmission will not shift out of 1st gear, even when I try to manually run through the gears. I am well aware of the problems with the tranny, but it was running fine before.

Anyone with a manual on these transmissions or expertise that can help me trace the source of the problem?
