If it's metallic grey, the top is probably not starting to fade.

Rather, it is beginning to show evidence of the dread clear coat disease. The clear coat is breaking down (sunny climate in it's history??) and in short order it will look very bad. If it is clear coat breakdown, and it's likely, the car will have to be stripped and repainted, as clear coat damage starts from the underneath side of the clear coat. Have a good paint shop look at it. My 82, and two other metallic grey bmw's all suffered the same fate. Quotes for repaints on this problem generally range from $2500 to $4000.
