Rather, it is beginning to show evidence of the dread clear coat disease. The clear coat is breaking down (sunny climate in it's history??) and in short order it will look very bad. If it is clear coat breakdown, and it's likely, the car will have to be stripped and repainted, as clear coat damage starts from the underneath side of the clear coat. Have a good paint shop look at it. My 82, and two other metallic grey bmw's all suffered the same fate. Quotes for repaints on this problem generally range from $2500 to $4000.
The clearcoat on my 85 745i has deteriorated on the trunk and hood. I took a razor knife and carefully scraped the remaining clearcoat off. Then wet sanded it with 1500 grit sandpaper. Now it's ready for a repaint. If you can paint, basecoat-clearcoat is the easiest paint to use. Since that basecoat goes on like a flat paint, and dries extremely fast, you only have to do a good job applying the clearcoat. I'll repaint a basecoat/clearcoat car anyday, rather than just trying to shoot straight enamel. Besides it ends up looking better, as I think enamels seem to cheapen the looks of a fine car.
