My 85 745i has been idling roughly and dies when the auto transmission is put in gear. Am I dealing with a fuel pump problem here? If so, are there two pumps on this model? Again, if so, which one is the likely culprit? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Erik J.

There are two fuel pumps. One(Main) under the left rear wheel. One (Auxillary) in the fuel tank. The fuel pump does not always cause rough idiling. You first should do a pressure fuel pressure check and be certain that you have 32psi. Also the fuel pressure regulator could be your problem. If you put the car under load and it dies, then you might blame the fuel pump, but if it just stalls and idles badly, it could be almost anything. Start by the process of elimination.
