I don't do a lot of work with firewalls, but it seems most people think the weakness of a software firewall is in the configuration, and if you configure them very tight, they get a little annoying with pop-ups that warn you about every little "tickle" on the port your broadband system is using. There are a lot of innocuous signals that may appear to be someone trying to access your computer. Therefore, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to proceed.

Physical hardware firewall, like D-link are apparently more adept in these areas. A couple of my customers use D-link firewalls, which apparently run about $100.
