Well Ted, I got the radio out and as you thought there were clips holding the radio in the dash. I'm glad I have a good set of feeler gauges because it sure was tight.
It all depends how they installed it.... Most likely they put in a DIN radio which is sitting in an aluminum chassis. The radio should have a release on each side. Sometimes all it takes is pushing back on the sides of the radio to unlock a spring in the unit. Once you release the springs the radio should just slide out. Depending upon how they wired it in you should have no trouble connecting in another radio.

The previous owner of my 83 733i installed a Sony radio that I want to remove. How involved will this be? Do I need to remove the console? I searched the archives and didn't find the specific answer. Thanks
