I have a 1984 745i with the 4-speed electronic auto transmission, and 178k miles. Within the past 3 days, when cold, the transmission will hold first gear for about 1-2 miles. It will then suddenly up-shift and operate normally. I have tried changing gears manually to no avail. This will only occur in the morning or after work. I can feel the tranny trying to up-shift (eg,. slight hesitation for the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift), but it will hold first for that 1-2 miles. Then, operate properly. Electrical connections? Something stuck? The fluid and filter was changed about 1 year ago. Any and all ideas are welcome!

Dan,

problem is most likely one of two things:
1. Relay behind right front speaker grill.
2. Valve body needs thorough cleaning and possible solenoid replacements.

If I can help on the valve body, let me know. I will clean for $75 and replace any parts at cost +10%.
